The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a two-week warning strike set to begin at midnight on Monday, 13th October 2025. This declaration was made by the union’s President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a press conference held at the University of Abuja.

The strike follows a stalemate in negotiations with the Federal Government. Despite the recent assurance from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, that discussions were nearing completion—including a ₦50 billion allocation for Earned Academic Allowances and a ₦150 billion budget for university revitalization in 2025—ASUU has turned down the latest government proposal, stating it does not adequately satisfy the union’s long-standing issues.

Prof. Piwuna specified ASUU’s demands, which encompass the full execution of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, disbursement of withheld salaries and promotion arrears, an end to alleged victimization of lecturers at certain universities, and the return of deducted cooperative and union fees. He criticized the government’s proposals as hasty and insufficient, mentioning that the union intends to present a detailed counter-proposal of its own.

Government’s Response
In reaction, the government cautioned that it might enforce the “no-work-no-pay” policy. Ministers Dr. Alausa and Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad reiterated their openness to dialogue but emphasized that the law would be applied when necessary. They urged academic unions to engage in constructive discussions and assured students and parents of their commitment to ensuring stability within universities.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed worries about the possible effects of the strike on the academic calendar for students.
