Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has sanctioned a substantial increase in the monthly stipends for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) assigned to the state, elevating the amount from ₦4,000 to as high as ₦50,000.

This represents one of the most significant revisions in nearly thirty years and highlights the governor’s dedication to enhancing youth welfare, fostering skill development, and strengthening the workforce in the state. As per the newly established allowance framework, all corps members assigned to Abia State will now attain a baseline payment of ₦20,000 from the state government. Additionally, corps members placed in state government agencies will receive an extra ₦10,000, raising their total monthly stipend from the state to ₦30,000. Moreover, corps members engaged in the education and health sectors—specifically teachers and healthcare workers—will acquire an additional ₦30,000, resulting in a total state allowance of ₦50,000 each month.

The announcement was made public through a statement released on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Njoku Ukoha, who clarified that this increase is part of the governor’s broader initiative to promote productivity and close the human resource gap in essential public service fields. Ukoha pointed out that the governor’s choice is not solely about providing financial assistance, but also about inspiring corps members to make meaningful contributions to the development of Abia State, especially in areas that have long faced underfunding and shortages of personnel.

“In conjunction with the Federal Government’s recently raised monthly NYSC allowance of ₦77,000, all corps members stationed in Abia State will now receive a fundamental monthly allowance of ₦20,000,” the statement indicated. “Those working within state government agencies, as well as educators and healthcare providers, will obtain an additional discriminatory payment of ₦10,000 and ₦30,000 respectively. This initiative aims to attract and retain skilled young Nigerians in vital service sectors and assist in bridging the human capacity gap caused by years of neglect and attrition in these areas.” Ukoha further mentioned that this increment complements the Federal Government’s reforms and aligns with Governor Otti’s vision of a revitalized and efficient public service. He stressed that the new policy exemplifies the administration’s commitment to investing in youth, who constitute the cornerstone of sustainable development in the state.

“This marks the first significant adjustment in 27 years,” the statement concluded, “and serves as a clear testament to Governor Otti’s commitment to empowering young people, advancing workforce development, and establishing a nurturing environment for corps members to excel during their service year in Abia State.”
