The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its ongoing warning strike after weeks of industrial action across the country.

Announcing the development at a press conference in Abuja, the ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, explained that the decision was reached following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC). He emphasized that the suspension was made in the interest of Nigerian students and the nation’s education sector, but warned that the government must act swiftly to resolve all unresolved matters.

ASUU urged the Federal Government to urgently address all the outstanding issues contained in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, which include improved funding for public universities, better working conditions for lecturers, and the full implementation of previously reached understandings.

Dr. Piwuna further stated that the suspension of the warning strike would take effect from midnight on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, allowing academic activities to resume across campuses.

He, however, cautioned that the union’s decision to suspend the strike should not be mistaken for weakness or compromise. According to him, ASUU will not hesitate to resume the industrial action if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands within one month, stressing that the union remains committed to defending the integrity of the Nigerian university system and ensuring a fair and sustainable academic environment for both staff and students.
